DVD Burning Workflow in Aperture 3

February 9, 2010 in Workflow by Thomas Boyd 1 comment

I work for a newspaper and I’m required to burn DVD’s of every assignment I shoot. It’s important that every images has IPTC metadata so anyone can use any kind of imaging software to see that metadata. TWith Aperture 3’s new feature that allows IPTC to be written directly to the master file without exporting, I’m spending much less time with this task. I’ll explain the steps I take to burn images to a dvd. This workflow assumes are have a referenced library.

Write IPTC to Masters

The first step in the process is writing the IPTC metadata to the image. First, select all the images in a project. Then go to the Metadata menu and select Write IPTC Metadata to Masters. A progress bar will appear.

Burn Away!

There are several ways to pull this off. If the folder contains less than 4.7GB of images, simply drag and drop the folder to an empty DVD and click burn. If the folder has more images than will fit on one DVD things get a little more complicated. You can either manually split the folders so they contain less than 4.7GB of images or you can use burning software that will automatically span the the disks over as many DVD’s as it takes. I recommend software called Disco that can be found here: http://www.discoapp.com/

Tips and Tricks

On problem I’ve encountered is losing track of which projects I’ve written metadata to for burning and which projects I’ve actually burned. Let’s deal with the first problem. There is more than one solution.
In my case I arrange my projects into folders by month. If you are sure it won’t cause any problems. You can select the folder and select all the images and write the IPTC metadata to all the images in that folder. You may be hesitant to do this because maybe you changed the IPTC in the library and don’t want it changed on masters. Whatever the reason, there is another way.

Let’s say you have three projects out of 10 that you need to write IPTC to the master for.

Try this: Command Click each project’s name. (Shift works too if they’re next to each other.)

When you do this APERTURE WILL NOW DISPLAY THE CONTENTS OF ALL THE FOLDERS IN THE BROWSER.
Select all. Write IPTC to Masters. This also works for command-clicking albums, light tables, books ,etc as well, btw. c as
