Matching GPS data to an iPhone in Aperture 3

February 9, 2010 in Tag by David Schloss 2 comments

While cell phones and some consumer cameras capture GPS data along with their photos (making it really easy to assign photos to locations in Places, amateur and professional SLR cameras don’t have that capability without add-on gear.

Since so many people carry the iPhone around, Apple’s built a super-easy way to assign photos to a location using the built-in GPS in the iPhone.

The idea is simple, every time you’re on location and want to be able to geotag your photos simply take our your iPhone and click a photo with it. It doesn’t matter what you photograph (you’re only after the GPS data, not the photo) and you only need one photo for each location you want to tag. (If you’re shooting a baseball game, you probably only need to take one photo. If you’re looking to tag images on a long hike, you’ll want to capture an image at each important point along the way)

Click Places

After importing your images from your camera, click on the Places icon on the Toolbar.

Import GPS

Connect your iPhone and then from the GPS menu in the Places mode above the Filmstrip viewer, select Import GPS from iPhone Photos…

Pick The GPS Shots

Aperture will present an interface showing the photos on the iPhone. Select any photos from which you want to import the GPS data. In this example we’ve picked four images from a shoot at the Jetta Cup.

Points on a Map

Aperture will add each of your GPS points to the map. Interestingly in this example we were shooting at a brand-new racetrack in New Jersey. Google Maps still hasn’t re-imaged the area since they built the racetrack, so it would have been just about for us to have figured out where exactly we were from the Google map. (Which tree do you think they made into a grandstand?) Since we captured actual GPS data, the points are placed on the map for us. There are three points here for the four images we selected for GPS because two of them were in the same location.

Drag Photos to Points

To assign photos to the points, simply select your photos and just drag them to a point on the map.

Data Added

All the photos you drag onto the point will be tagged with that location information.

Now you can write off your iPhone as a photographic expense.

Exciting stuff. Just plunked down my $99, and waiting with baited breath. (bacon breath?)

Do the new places features allow for exporting of maps (with associated photos) to google maps or google earth, or to be embedded into websites? Thanks!
